The Saint Nicholas Church, the first Catholic church after centuries of forced absence of catholic heritage in The Netherlands, but thanks to the Constitution in 1848 Freedom of Religion was proclaimed. In 1578 the Protestants took over the former Saint Nicholas Church and changed the name into Old Church. It was there where the Saint Nicholas tradition was started at the annual Nicholas market. The Protestants still allowed the Saint Nicholas tradition that was originally a Catholic tradition.
