A first church in Montagnac is mentioned from 990 in a cartulary of Agde. The church had to be rebuilt after the increase in population following the economic boom of the city caused by the establishment of fairs granted by the bishops of Agde in the 13th century and the kings of France following the attachment of Languedoc to the royal domain. The city was bought by Louis IX and obtained the status of royal city.
