The Albornoz fortress overlooking the town of Spoleto, in Umbria, is situated on the top of the hill s. elia. It was built by Pope Innocent VI to strengthen military and make clear the authority of the Church in the territories of central Italy. It was built between 1359 and 1370 and the work was directed first by the Spanish Cardinal Albornoz and ended under the direction of 'architect Matteo Gattaponi.
