He was born in a large miller s family. According to the wishes of his parents, he was to become a scholar, and therefore he began to attend the University of Leiden at the age of fourteen. But right away, his artistic inclinations began to show, and because of that he left school. He entered the workshop of the painter Jacop Isaaksz van Swanenburgh as a pupil, where he worked for three years. Even as a young artist, he came into direct contact with the work of another native of Leiden: Lucas van Leiden, which, with its compositions and motifs, left its mark on Rembrandt s other work.Leiden in Rembrandt s time was a city where artists from nearer and further cities came into contact. Thanks to the Leiden artistic tradition, Rembrandt had the opportunity to familiarize himself with the works of Dürer, Holbein, Rubens, Raphael and others. The entire Dutch painting school of the previous two generations was represented here with good works.
