Reed scientific name: Phragmites australis Cav. Trin. ex Steud., perennial aquatic or wet tall grass with well-developed rhizomes. Culm erect, 1-3 meters high, with more than 20 nodes. Panicle large, many branches; spikelets glabrous; palea with two ridges rough; anthers yellow; caryopsis about 1.5 mm long. Reeds are born in rivers and lakes, along the banks of ponds and ditches and in low wetlands.
A variety of reeds are found along the water`s edge and are particularly beautiful during the flowering season for viewing. Since the leaves, leaf sheaths, stems, rhizomes and adventitious roots of reeds all have ventilation tissues, they play an important role in purifying sewage. Reed stalks are tough and high in fiber content, making them a rare raw material in the paper industry.
