Stock Photo: Redpoint Salmon Fishing Station, Scotland

Up on the west coast of the Scottish highlands, opposite the isle of Skye, is this long redundant salmon fishing station. Fishermen would spend months here during the spring and autumn salmon runs, away from their families. They would anchor one end of the gill net on the beach, then row out to deep water, paying the net out as they went. about half a mile offshore. Because salmon always stay close to the shore, attempting to scent the freshwater rivers in which they were born, they would then be caught in the nets. This remote station was last used in the 1960,s.
