The Mesoamerican pyramids, also known as Teocalli, are an important element of ancient Mesoamerican architecture. These structures were usually stepped pyramids with temples built on top, much more similar to Mesopotamian ziqqurat than Egyptian pyramids. The largest Mesoamerican region containing pyramids, the largest in the world, is that of Cholula, in the Mexican state of Puebla. Many of these structures have a platform on top, upon which a sacred building was built, associated with a particular Mayan deity. Mayan pyramids were also erected to serve as burial places for powerful kings.
