La Alberca is a municipality in the province of Salamanca, where people have been living since before the arrival of the Romans. According to legend, in 1465 the women of the town defeated Portuguese troops, and, in this victory, claimed the Portuguese flag, which is still preserved today in the village. La Alberca was the first rural village in Spain to be given National Historic Heritage status. The main square, surrounded on all four sides by columned porches, continues to be the centre of the town`s social life.
