Pictured is an engraved stone plaque and door at the base of the clock and bell tower of the Church of Saint George on the central square in Varenna on Lake Como. The church was built from 1250 to 1313 and the ancient Romanesque bell tower was replaced in 1653. The plaque translated to English from Italian reads The Calvasina an ancient family of marble workers from Varenna wanted the restoration of this monument from 1653 Christmas 1978
