The Pioneer Inn was built in 1901 by George Freeland. Freeland was a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who came to the islands in pursuit of a criminal and decided to stay. For a long time, the Pioneer Inn was the only hotel in Lahaina. The hotel underwent an extensive expansion in 1964.
