The monument was commissioned by the Society of Veterans Garibaldi in memory of the fallen of the battle supported by the same partisans November 3, 1867 in Mentone and Monterotondo (a few days earlier), against the papal troops and French in an attempt to open a road to Rome. The sketches competitors were displayed at the Artists' Club of Florence in 1898, and among these, was judged the winner the one proposed by the sculptor Oreste Calzolari. The work was officially inaugurated on April 27, 1902, but already in November of the previous year, being now imminent completion of the work, the same square was hired by resolution of the City Council changed its name to the square Mentone.
