Sitting on the small Pfalz Island, this medieval (mid-14th century) installation was a toll house. It could house up to 20 soldiers and was well armed. Dangerous cataracts on the opposite bank forced ships to pass in the narrow chanel between the toll house and land near Kaub, Germany.
