Bhairava ('frightful'), or Kala Bhairava, is a Hindu Shaivite and Vajrayana Buddhist deity worshipped in India, Nepal, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, as well as Japan. In Shaivism, he is a powerful avatar of Shiva, associated with annihilation. In Vajrayana Buddhism, he is considered a fierce emanation of boddhisatva Manjusri, and also called Heruka, Vajrabhairava and Yamantaka. Bhairava wears a tiger skin and a ritual apron composed of human bones, and is depicted with a range of twisted serpents.
