A papal or general audience is a public, Catholic gathering in Vatican City for the weekly address from the pope and his cardinals, who bless the crowd. The 90-minute event is typically held on Wednesday mornings in St. Peter’s Square. While it is not a mass, the pope leads the audience in prayer, blessings, and a homily in multiple languages. Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State. Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere.
