The river of the same name flows through its territory, navigable in the last stretch, which flows into the gulf. The fleet of the Venetian Gauls, put together to counter the expansion of the Romans of Julius Caesar, in 56 BC. he left from here to fight the battle of Morbihan. The Roman fleet, commanded by Decimus Brutus, defeated the Venetian fleet even though it was superior in number of ships. In 1082 there is the first mention of a fortress in Auray. In 1201 the Duke of Brittany Arthur I built a stone castle. The Battle of Auray in 1364 marked the end of the War of the Breton Succession. In 1464 the Goustan Bridge was restored and since then called the New Bridge. In 1560 the castle was demolished and today only a few remains remain. The first railway line arrived in Auray in 1862.
