Bactris gasipaes Kunth is a species of multistem palm in the Arecaceae family whose fruit is known as pupunha or babunha. The species is native to the Amazon region where it is popularly known by the names pepunheira and pupunha-green-yellow. A plant of the Arecaceae family former Palmae, from carnauba, babassu and açaÃ, from which several aspects are used: fruits and palm hearts as food; straw in basketry and roofing for houses; flowers as a seasoning; stipe in crafts and constructions; and almonds for oil extraction.
