Gently apply this acid-based solution using a cleaning cloth or pad on the rusty metal surface and leave it there for about 15-20 minutes. Now, scrub off the area with some abrasive until rusting particles are removed. Rust is iron oxide, which does not harm plants in moderate amounts, because it is not water-soluble unless the soil ph is very low. In fact, oxidised iron is what gives most red subsoil their colour. Watering your plants with this water will not harm them at all. While most plant pots will break or fade over time, aluminium pots are durable and will survive a longer time period. The material is able to face the elements. Aluminium does not corrode– even in coastal areas. This makes it the ideal, cost-effective solution to planting in such areas.
