More than 4,000 feet (1,200 m) long, the Rockland, Maine Breakwater was built in the 1890s by the United States Army Corps of Engineers out of locally quarried granite. The huge stone blocks were cut to fit precisely and placed end-to-end in water up to 70 feet deep, extending nearly a mile into the ocean. The breakwater protects against violent Atlantic storms. This image can also be a business metaphor for hanging on during difficult economic times.
