In the Old State Capitol Building in Springfield, Illinois, Abraham Lincoln served his last term as a state lawmaker from 1840 to 1841. He also pleaded cases here before the state supreme court between 1841 and 1860. This site also is where Lincoln made his House Divided speech in June 1858, when he announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. In 2007, Barack Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States at the site.
