In the early years of San Francisco, buildings had no, or incorrect standards for earthquake safety. This was just as true for firehouses as personal houses.
Engine NO 1 had an original house, built in 1868 that was destroyed by the earthquake of 1906.
Their new house was built in 1908 at 451 Pacific Avenue.
In 1958, the San Francisco Fire Department permanently closed and moved Engine NO 1. This building is in the now fashionable Jackson Square neighborhood and has been the home of offices ever since.
