Pictured is an obelisk monument commemorating the victims of the Battle of San Jose del Cabo, a military engagement of the Mexican-American War which took place on two November days in 1847, after the fall of Mexico City. A small American force holding the town was attacked by a larger force of around 150 Mexican militiamen, mainly peasants from the suburbs, led by Lieutenant Jose Antonio Mijares who was killed in the unsuccessful attack. The obelisk is located in The Mijares Plaza, the main town square in San Jose del Cabo known as La Plaza by locals.
