Illustration: Nuclear Chain Reaction

ID 18968782 © Arvib85 | Megapixl.com

Self amplifying nuclear chain reaction. Tiny green balls are neutrons, the red ones are protons. Together they make up an atomic nucleus. When slow neutron hits the nucleus it splits into two smaller nuclei, spits out few neutrons and releases energy. For instance, uranium-235 splits into barium-141, krypton-92 and 3 neutrons. Then these neutrons hits other nucleus and so on.
