The Swing Bridge was opened in 1876 and rotates by means of hydraulic power connecting Newcastle and Gateshead. The mechanism used today is still the same machinery installed during construction in 1873. The bridge was paid and designed by William Armstrong in order to maneuver bigger ships upstream to his works. Note the old medieval castle in the background and surrounding stone built architecture.
