The VLA is a 22-mile wide telescope made up of 27 dish antennas and is located in the plains of San Augustin, New Mexico. Each antenna is 82 feet 25 meters across and weighs 230 tons. With the help of a supercomputer they function as one giant telescope. The VLA observes radio waves which are focused into a receiver by the main dish, the subreflector and feedhorns all visible in the photo.
