Steam locomotives were first developed in the United Kingdom during the early 19th century and used for railway transport until the middle of the 20th century. 80% of the current Nigerian railways were originally built by the colonial power, Great Britain. The railways were built to the 1,067 mm 3 ft 6 in Cape gauge, the same track gauge used in most other British colonies in Africa.
