Tawhiti Rahi is an island 20km off the north island of New Zealand, once inhabited by the Maori. After most of tribe was massacred by a rivals, the island was declared tapu or off limits. The rich island has now been declared a nature reserve and the waters around it are a popular dive destination as part of the Poor Knight Islands, named by Captain Cook.
