The umbilical cord is of very distinct tissues that can be viewed through a microscope once it has been stained. Staining requires the tissue to be cut very thin. Thin is defined in paraffin histology as a number between 2-6 microns. This tissue has been cut a 5 microns. A micron is 1-1000 of a millimeter. At 5 microns, 2-3 cell layers are seen through the microscope. This tissue has been stained a special stain called Massons Trichrome. A trichrome is 3 colors. It delineates muscle verse collagen. The dark red is muscle, while the green is collagen. At a higher power the nuclei can been seen as purplish black.
