Pictured is a mural featuring groundbreaking black figures in history by Malcom Byers at Ronald E. McNair Elementary in Dallas, Texas. It was painted for the Black History mural project launched in February, 2021, by Phoenix activist Gizette Knight. February has been Black History Month in the United States since 1970. Malcom Byers choose Mae Jemison, Dr. Sian Proctor, and Ronald McNair for his mural for the Black History Month Mural Project in February, 2022. Mae Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She was the first black woman to travel into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor. Sian Proctor is an American commercial astronaut and geology professor. On September 15, 2021 she was launched into earth`s orbit as the pilot of the Crew Dragon space capsule. Ronald Erwin McNair was an American NASA astronaut and physicist. He was the second African American in space and died tragically when the Space Shuttle Challenger was destroyed during the launch.
