Mukhtar Mai speaks in Sacramento, California, USA, in December, 2007. Mai is a Pakistani woman who suffered a gang as a form of honour revenge, on the demands of tribesmen. By custom, rural women are expected to commit suicide after such an event. Instead, she spoke up and took her case to court where her rapists were arrested and charged. She used the funds won in her court case to open a women's school in her home town. In December of 2007 she made a rare public appearance in the USA, speaking before a group in Sacramento, California. This photograph waa captured at that event.
