The Mt John Observatory is New Zealand's premier astronomical research observatory located next to Lake Tekapo at 1029m above sea level. The observatory is in the northern end of the Mackenzie Basin which protects the area from 'weather'. In 2012 a large area around the observatory was declared as the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve by the International Dark-Sky Association, one of only four such reserves around the world.
