A magnificent monastery of the Hieronymite hermit order founded in 1499 by Emmanuel I in Belém, a suburb of Lisbon, Portugal. It commemorates Vasco da Gama's discovery of a sea-passage to India, and was built on the site of the chapel in which he is said to have prayed.
