The Russian Russian Orthodox cross is an eight-pointed Christian Orthodox cross, a symbol of the Russian Orthodox Church. It has been known since the VI century, long before the split of the Christian Church into Catholics and Orthodox. It was used in Byzantine fresco painting and decorative and applied art. In 1551, during the canonical isolation of the Russian Orthodox Church, on the initiative of Ivan the Terrible, for the first time in history, the domes of churches began to be erected. Since that time, it has been used on Russian state and military symbols. Subsequently, it became a distinctive feature of the cultural landscape of Russia.
