Inaugurated in 1902, it was designed by the architect José López Salaberry. It consists of a pedestal, made by Salaberry himself, and a bronze statue made by the famous sculptor Mateo Inurria. The statue represents the distinguished writer Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio, called the Phoenix of the Wits, dressed in a cassock and reading a book. On the faces of the pedestal there is an allegory in relief that represents poetry, a coat of arms of Madrid, and some titles of the works that this genius of literature wrote.
