Pictured is the Monumental Altar of Saint Regolo by Matteo Civitali in 1484 in Lucca Cathedral in Lucca, Italy. Saint Regolo is one of the patron saints of Lucca. Little is known of him, except that he was a 3rd-century bishop, originally from Africa, and was martyred, likely in L’Aquila, in Central Italy. His remains were later transferred to Lucca. The burial urn is between two angels with the figure of the Holy Bishop on top, and a Madonna with Child in the central lunette. Statues of St. John the Baptist, St. Regulus, and St. Sebastian are within niches below. Matteo Civitali was the most famous Luccan sculptor of the early Renaissance.
