Peter Doig (born in Edinburgh in 1959) is one of the most highly regarded and exciting painters working today. His reinvigoration of the decorative tradition in painting, his formal inventiveness, romantic suggestivity and his sensuous use of colour set him apart from the dominant conceptual approach of art today. His willingness to take up the challenge still posed by the paintings of Gauguin, Matisse, Bonnard, Marsden Hartley and Edward Hopper places him in a long line of great colourists, expressive handlers of paint and creators of richly textured worlds.
