The island was used for strategic purposes even from the 6th century, but a permanent abbey was constructed in 8th century. It fluourished in the next centuries, but by the time of the French Revolution it was almost inhabited. Following this event, it was used as a prison until 1863 when the abbey was restored. Today Mont Saint Michel is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the most visited places in France and Europe. HDR image.
