Microglia are a type of immune cells found in the central nervous system (CNS) of mammals, including humans. They are the resident macrophages of the CNS and play a crucial role in maintaining brain homeostasis and responding to injury or infection. Microglia act as the primary immune defense in the brain, engulfing and clearing cellular debris, pathogens, and abnormal proteins through a process called phagocytosis. They also participate in neuroinflammation and contribute to synaptic pruning during brain development. Additionally, microglia have been implicated in various neurological disorders, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
