Mexican Ancient Aztec, Mayan calendar Art, Mayan sculpture decoration on wall with pretty backlight Mayans 2000 BCE-1500 CE The Mayans established a variety of kingdoms around major hubs as well as their less populated regions. Palenque, Copán, and Piedras Negras, for instance embodied the model of a city-state with outskirts. These hubs were politically independent but culturally and economically connected. Some larger areas such as Tikal and Kalak’mulm, became great cities with dependent provinces. A single culture encompassed nearly a dozen kingdoms, each with a highly elaborate city system and class structure.
