Red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) is a bird in the family Phasianidae. Found across much of Southeast Asia and parts of South Asia, it was earlier known as Bankiva or Bankiva Fowl. This species include chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus), grey junglefowl, Sri Lankan junglefowl and green junglefowl. While chickens are also classified as red junglefowl, the term often only refers to wild subspecies in common parlance. Chicken was domesticated from red junglefowl about 8,000 years ago. Since then, their domestic form has spread around the world.
