A male long tailed skimmer dragonfly, also called whitetail skimmer, Plathemis lydia, resting on a rock in summer. The white tail develops as the male becomes mature and is caused by a powdery substance the process is called pruinosity. Adult males are territorial and the bright tail is a signal to others.
