Stock Photo: Lough Nahanagan Hydro Electric Lake

Lough Nahanagan (lake of the watermonster) is a Corrie lake below Turlough Hill Ireland's only electricity 'storage' hydro-plant. During periods of low electricity demand, off-peak current is used to pump water up from Lough Nathanagan, a corrie lake just visible here at the foot of Turlough Hill, to an artificial reservoir at the top. Then, when electricity demand is high, the water is fed back through turbines inside the mountain to produce hydro-electric power for the national grid.
