3rd Jun 2014, Halali Rest camp, Etosha Namibia proved to be one of the scariest & most adrenaline pumping night we have ever witnessed in wilderness. We were on a 3 hour night safari, which was proving to be a real damp squib with nothing interesting happening for the first two & half hours, when suddenly all hell broke loose. We stopped forty feet away near a rotting Zebra carcass being devoured by a pack of four Hyenas. Suddenly a Lioness strutted in & shooed them away & started munching it. The 4 deadly Spotted hyenas although retreated but on hearing the bone cracking mouthfuls, regrouped & started a shrill howling & angry gruff grunt war chant. They slowly cordoned her. The stench of the angry Hyenas was more overpowering than the rotting carcass. The way they started closing on the Lioness was nothing short of a scheming Guerilla warfare plan. The Lioness which growled first was surprised, when they started attacking her. The air which was frigid below zero Celsius, suddenly heated up. The crafty Hyenas at her rear started biting her. The night still & silent till a few moments back, was alive with now the screams of a bleeding Lioness. To our utter horror, the Lioness left her sumptuous dinner & ran on the road between the two Safari vehicles, which to now our concern had no doors, no windows, an invite to all the deadly Fives out there. What a sight! The bleeding scared Lioness now whimpering, her tail between her rear legs & four brave angry Hyenas at her!
