Screen, stage, and television actor Larry Gates is caught after a performance as `Chief Justice James Jefferson Crawford` of the Supreme Court in the Broadway-bound play, `First Monday in October,` at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in December, 1977. Gates is remembered for playing the role of a racist character, `Eric Endicott,` who slaps in the face, and is in return slapped by Sidney Poiter, the title character in the film, `They Call Me Mr. Tibbs,` opposite the great Rod Steiger as the local Mississippi sheriff. Gates died from leukemia on December 12, 1996, at the age of 81.
