Islands split the stream of the Laramie River at the place where wagons crossed to enter Fort Laramie on the Oregon Trail. Large flat area on the east side of the fort used as a camp site for wagon trains moving on the trail westward. Small building in the background was the old guardhouse where miscreant soldiers were held prisoner for various crimes.
