Pictured is the Kopernik stainless steel sculpture by Dudley Talcott along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dudley Talcott 1899-1986 was an American sculptor, author, and illustrator. The sculpture was commissioned by the local Polish American community and donated to the City of Philadelphia to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Polish astronomer Mikolaj Kopernik. He was the first to propose that the at the time revolutionary idea that the earth revolves around the sun. The 16-foot outer circle represents the earth`s orbit, and the inner disks symbolize the sun sending out its rays of light.
