Koltur Island is located in the central part of the archipelago. To the west and southwest, the Atlantic Ocean stretches out, while other islands obscure the view from other sides. In the northwest it is Vágar, divided by the Vágafjørður fjord. In the north, northeast and east, Streymoy, the largest island of the archipelago, is visible. It is separated from Koltur by another fjord, Hestsfjørður. The last island visible from there is Hestur in the southeast, separated by the Kolturssund Strait.The southernmost and easternmost point on the island is Cape Kolturstangi, while the northernmost and westernmost point on the island is Nakkur.
