The fort was built on a rocky cliff that stretches from north-west and from afar is almost impossible to make out that it is a building, the more so as the walls that cascade rise in three bands constructed of limestone blocks in the limestone cliffs. Inaccessible with three sides - the only entrance is located on the northwest side. The northern side is extremely steep, while the south side of the field down to a more moderate decline. These features definitely influenced quite a few unsuccessful attempts at winning works. Key positions for artillery attacks was elevation ridge north of the fort itself. The fort's footprint elongated and narrow, which led to the upgrading destroyed part of the previous layers. At the site of the fort, there is still the ancient Illyrian hill. Much of the current design dates from the period of the Venetian and Austrian rule when the fortress was modernized. During the Ottoman period there was no rearrangement of the fortifications.
