The group is treated either as a single family, Alcedinidae, or as a suborder Alcedines containing three families, Alcedinidae & x28;river kingfishers& x29;, Halcyonidae & x28;tree kingfishers& x29;, and Cerylidae & x28;water kingfishers& x29;.
