The 60-foot-tall granite monument is perched atop 90-foot-tall Kill Devil Hill, North Carolina, commemorating the achievement of the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur. This achievement was the first sustained flight by a manned, heavier-than-air powered and controlled aircraft—an airplane—on December 17, 1903. Atop the tower is a marine beacon, similar to one found on a lighthouse.
