Kabuki-za in Ginza is the principal theater in Tokyo for the traditional Kabuki dramas. The original wooden Kabuki-za building was completed in 1889, but destroyed by the fire in 1921. Soon after the reconstruction of the building began, the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake struck and the building was again destroyed. The theater was rebuilt in a different style in 1924, but this time heavily damaged in the Allied bombing during the Second World War. It was restored in 1950 preserving the style of 1924 reconstruction, and in 2002, registered as a National Tangible Cultural Property. However, due to the deterioration, the whole building was demolished in spring 2010 and new Kabuki-za theater complex, succeeding the basic design of the previous one is due to be open in 2013.
